Tautai, the Metaphor for Adaptivity and Resilience
Our mission at tautai.net is to work together to shape the organizations of the future – adaptive, innovative, and human. We bring together thought leaders, creatives, and designers from a wide range of industries to exchange ideas, rethink collaboration, and drive sustainable transformation.

The Polynesians were the best sailors in the world. Thousands of years ago, their pilots, the Tautai, navigated their boats through the endless water deserts of the Pacific, settled on widely scattered islands, and developed traditions and culture over thousands of nautical miles.
The Tautai understood that their only stability came from constant adaptation.
The Tautai were adaptive and resilient, mobile and flexible. They led through competence and cooperation.
The Polynesians were perfectly equipped to thrive in a complex, dangerous world.
What We Do

The Tautai Operating Model
We explore ways to thrive under uncertainty and rapid change. When environments become volatile, prediction fails and best practices decay. The Tautai Operating Model offers a principle-based way to navigate organizations under uncertainty.

Human Work in Times of AI
How we integrate Artificial Intelligence into the way we live and work will be the cornerstone of the next version of our society. We want AI a tool for emancipation and ownership, not for establishing monopolies and persistent dependency.
The Book

The aim of The Tautai Principle is to help organizations remain viable in environments marked by growing complexity, speed, and uncertainty—without relying on the illusion of control or endless transformation initiatives.
The book is the basis of our direction of work. It introduces a practical operating model for strategic adaptivity, grounded in the idea that sensemaking, not execution, has become the primary limiting factor of organizational performance.
It reframes leadership as a collective capability, challenges established management principles that turn into traps under complexity, and shifts the focus from planning and alignment to perception, interpretation, and continuous adjustment. Drawing on systems thinking and real-world consulting experience, the book connects organizational viability, identity, and decision-making into a coherent framework.
Rather than offering recipes or tools, it provides managers and change agents with clearer ways of seeing their organization—so that adaptation becomes a normal, ongoing capability rather than a disruptive event.
How we Work
Through interactive formats and collaborative learning, we create an environment in which everyone can contribute their expertise, discover new perspectives, and develop concrete solutions for future-proof organizations.
Be part of tautai – a network that actively drives change and empowers people to surpass themselves. Together, we are making the future a reality today.
What this means
A coherent model you can learn, use, and own — not another consulting framework buffet.
- Principles first
- Application to real decisions
- Adoption over time
What this doesn’t mean
- Generic change programs
- Framework shopping
- Outsourced thinking
If the principles resonate, we’ll work from the book — or we won’t work at all.

Tautai: where does it come from?
The Tautai were the courageous pilots of the Samoans who sailed the South Pacific in their wooden boats. Tautai is the perfect metaphor for our crazy times.

Origins
I came across the Tautai metaphor some time ago and it immediately fascinated me. It connects everything that moves me: it is the radical adaptivity that allows them to survive and thrive in this environment.
This is the element that companies need most today. Building on competence and professionalism, they need the structures and the will to adapt and lead change .
Your company loses out to competitors who react faster than you do. While you are still analyzing and planning, they are already adapting and gaining an advantage. This speed gap is your biggest strategic weakness.
